Massachusetts Hospitals

Hospitals and the health systems to which they belong play an important role in the Massachusetts health care system, and are critical to achieving the Commonwealth’s goals of controlling costs while maintaining or improving the quality of care delivered.  CHIA monitors and provides meaningful analysis on Massachusetts hospitals and hospital health systems hospitals through a variety of metrics and studies. 

Hospital profiles are available for each Massachusetts acute and non-acute hospital, in addition to an overall summary of the hospital industry. The profiles provide comparative information on hospital characteristics, services, payer mix, and trends in utilization, cost, and financial performance.

Another important measure that CHIA monitors is acute hospital financial health, reported in the quarterly and annual financial reports, and databooks.

An acute hospital is a hospital that is licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, which contains a majority of medical-surgical, pediatric, obstetric, and maternity beds. CHIA's Massachusetts Hospital Profiles provide descriptive and comparative information on each acute and non-acute hospitals based on hospital characteristics, services, payer mix, utilization trends, top discharges, and financial performance and cost trends over a five-year period.
